Regulated by CPA Canada, this certification combines rigorous education, examinations, and practical experience, unlocking diverse career pathways. CPA Canada has signed a MOU with the Indian Institute of Chartered Accountants, allowing an Indian CA to write only one Common Final Exam (CFE) to obtain the Canadian CPA certification. A Canadian CPA possesses technical skills and strategic understanding, which are important for navigating today’s complex business landscapes and driving organizational success. Esteemed in the professional arena, this designation showcases the mastery of accounting principles and a commitment to maintaining ethical standards.

3 E’s for Canadian CPA certification
To become a CPA in Canada, you must meet three key criteria: Education, Eligibility, and Exam requirements.
Education
• The candidate needs to be a CA from India.
Eligibility
• Obtain a good standing certificate from the CA institute.
Exam
• Take the CFE, a three-day computer-based exam covering core accounting topics.
• Exams are held in May and September.
• Exams are held only in Canada.
Canadian CPA Exam Structure
The Canadian CPA Exam is structured into six examinations, comprising Core Modules 1 and 2, two elective modules, and two capstone modules, culminating in the Common Final Examination (CFE).
Indian Chartered Accountants (CAs) benefit from a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between CPA Canada and the ICAI. This agreement allows qualified CAs to become Canadian CPAs without completing all exams of the CPA PEP program. They are exempt from the core and elective courses, enabling them to write the final Common Final Examination (CFE) directly.
Overview of Common Final Examination (CFE)
- The Common Final Examination (CFE) is a three-day case-based exam.
- Cases in the CFE are more extensive than those in the Indian CA exam, often dealing with multiple issues.
- The time allocated for cases can range from 70 minutes to as long as 5 hours.
- You may need to read 5 or 6 pages for a short case, while a long case can have as many as 15 to 20 pages.
- Cases typically consist of an approximately 1-page main body followed by multiple appendices.
Breakdown of CFE
- Duration: The CFE spans over 3 days.
- Day 1: Features one large 4-hour "Comp" case based on Capstone 1.
- Day 2: Involves one large 5-hour case called "Role Comp."
- Day 3: Consists of three shorter cases, each lasting between 70-90 minutes, totaling 4 hours. These cases are known as "Multi" cases.
- Competencies Covered in CFE: Audit & Assurance, Financial Reporting, Management Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Strategy, and Governance.
CFE Exam Breakdown: Day-by-Day Guide
• The case is based on the one used in Capstone 1, involving the same company but set 5 or 10 years later.
• It is marked separately from Days 2 and 3 and is graded as a simple “PASS” or “FAIL”.
• This exam part is not technical and encompasses strategy, governance, and SWOT analysis.
• This case typically involves financial accounting and/or management accounting issues.
• Candidates must choose one of four roles before the exam and address issues specific to that role.
• The four roles are Audit, Tax, Performance Management, or Finance.
• Therefore, the case will cover competencies related to financial or management accounting, along with the chosen role.
• Each case covers about 4–6 competencies.
• All candidates write the same cases without a choice of role.
• Days 2 and 3 are marked together.
• If unsuccessful, candidates only have to repeat the day(s) that they failed.
