No, you can take these exams in any order. It does not have to be Part 1 first and then Part 2. You can take the Part 2 exam first and then Part 1, and they can be taken in different testing windows too.

Each of the two exams (Parts 1 and 2) is a four-hour test that includes 100 multiple-choice questions and two essay questions. You’ll have 3 hours to complete the MCQs section and 1 hour to finish the essay questions.

  • The CMA exam has a score range of 0-500, with a minimum passing score of 360 for both sections.
  • Multiple-choice questions represent 75% of the score, and the essays cover 25%. A candidate must score at least 50% on the multiple-choice section to advance to the essay questions, but you do not necessarily have to pass the essay sections to pass the CMA Exam.
  • Essay questions give you partial credit; you receive points if your essay discusses some of the methods involved in calculating the answer.
  • Exams are graded by the CMA using a scaled scoring system. The exam’s overall score is modified according to how challenging the questions are.

The preparation of financial statements is a necessary skill for a CMA applicant. In addition, you should be familiar with business economics, the time value of money, statistics, probability, and other tools used to make financial decisions.

Your performance report will be sent to you via email about 14 days after the exam results are made public. If you do not pass, you’ll receive performance data on each key topic area on the exam, including where you scored well and where to improve. 

Any part of the US CMA exam can be taken once in a testing window, and exam retakes need a new registration and exam fee payment. The US CMA candidates have three years to complete both exam sections. If you do not complete both US CMA parts, you have to retake them.
